The Inter-regional Consortium of Socioeconomic Initiatives operates in the regions of Ribera d’Ebre and Terra Alta, located in the south of Catalonia, in the Terres de l’Ebre region.
It is a homogenous zone due to its potential for development, socioeconomic situation and because it has largely protected areas as well as spaces of natural interest. Both regions have similar problems and, for a long time, they have been working together to develop common products in different areas, such as the promotion of tourist assets.
More than half of the area is forested, mainly covered by scrub, white pine and vacant land. Agricultural crops such as the monocultures of olive and sweet fruit, and the agroforestry mosaics of the vineyard stand out. The importance of the economic sectors is different in both regions. While in the Ribera d’Ebre, the energy industry predominates far above the other sectors and distinguished the region from other Catalan regions.
In the Terra Alta the most prominent sectors are agriculture and services. Both counties offer basic services such as educational, health, sports and consumer centers. They also have public transport, which connects the area with cities such as Reus, Tarragona, Lleida or Tortosa. There is also a rail service that goes from Mora la Nova to Barcelona.
