The Consorcium for the Development of Baix Ebre i Montsià operates in the southernmost counties of Catalonia, in the Terres de l’Ebre, with a privileged position between Catalonia, Valencia and Aragón and two very dynamic axes: the Ebro corridor and the Mediterranean axis.
In terms of landscape, the territory has several areas, which include Els Ports, the Montsià and Cardó mountain ranges, as well as the interior and coastal plains, and finally, the riverbank and the Delta, formed by the Ebre River. The Ebre has played a decisive role in the economic and social fabric of both regions. This landscape has recently been recognized as a Biosphere Reserve, along with the regions of Terra Alta and Ribera de l’Ebre, and surrounded by the Natural Park of the Delta de l’Ebre and the Natural Park of the Ports. The territory is also characterized by demographic differences, especially between inland areas, particularly the more mountainous ones, with smaller and less populated areas, and those of the plains and the coast, which are denser and where a large part of economic activity is concentrated and productive, and communication axes.
Economic growth in the region is marked by rice crops in the Delta, crops in the interior, predominantly olive trees, and irrigated crops such as citrus and orchard trees. Fishing activity is also very relevant, as well as a highly diversified industry, with subsectors such as food, construction materials, chemicals and furniture. Lastly, the service and tourism sector has a prominent role on the coast but also in the mountainous regions and the Delta.
