Western Pirineu Leader Consorciu operates in the four high mountain regions of the Catalan Western Pyrenees: Alta Ribagorça, Pallars Jussà, Pallars Sobirà and Vall d’Aran.
These regions extend territorially in a diverse physical environment and of great biodiversity composed of forests, rivers, ponds, high and medium mountain meadows, and an abrupt orography of mountain ranges that reach 3,000 meters. These orographic conditions have caused a dispersed settlement, with sparsely populated nuclei, especially in the headwaters of the valleys.
As resources and sources of economic activity, forests and derived products stand out. These include water and snow sports and leisure activities, as well as the hydroelectric industry, and activities related to the natural, cultural and landscape heritage. Livestock activity is also very important, it has shaped a landscape of meadows and pasture, which coexist with wooded areas and is currently in decline due to the abandonment of the activity.
