Ponent Leader Associacion acts in a very diverse territory. It is comprised of the Pla d’Urgell, Urgell, las Garrigues and Segrià (south) regions. It’s an area that lies within the great extension of the Catalan Central Depression and is characterized by the soft reliefs and horizontal landscapes occupied by dry and irrigated crops, among which the fruit and the olive tree stand out.
This homogeneous relief, which mainly occupies the northern urgellenca plain, becomes abrupt in the south and southeast areas up to the Serralada Prelitoral slopes. The use of land destined in higher proportions to agricultural crops, with the agrarian sector as the territorial economical engine.
During ages the main aim of the four regions has been to transform a part of the dry land into irrigated land. This process has culminated with the construction of the Segarra-Garrigues Canal, which should contribute to making the sector more competitive, transforming production and crops into an important part of the territory.
The transport routes also cause a differential development in the group’s area of activity. The Urgell and the Pla d’Urgell, which are better communicated, have become centers of intermediation of products and services. The Garrigues and the south of the Segrià, on the other hand, with more deficient infrastructures, are characterized by a higher rate of aging of the population and less dynamism.
